Season Two
(Guest stars who later played roles in or directed Starsky & Hutch are bolded and linked.)
Here are a few reactions I had after watching each episode. I hope to write more thoughtful reviews in the future.
The Woody was wrecked in the episode "The Death of Wild Bill Hannacheck"...
"Goodbye old paint." ~Linc
The Girl In Chair Nine Captain Greer reluctantly enlists the aid of a psychic to help find a kidnapped coed.
Directed by: Gene Nelson
Guest stars: Cesare Danova, John Stephenson, Veronica Cartwright, Robert R. Cannon, Sylvia Hayes, Lillian Bronson
Rated: three and a half stars out of five
"Remember when you said I had a secret life? And that there were two men in it? There's a third man in my life." ~Julie
My Take: "Big Mama" wore the same dress that "Fifi" wears later in Starsky & Hutch. Also they show the same exterior of a house that is often used in Starsky & Hutch. Fun to see all the businesses on the street. I saw a Baskin & Robbins, Pacific Security Bank, Safeway, etc. Linc wears his watch on his right hand.
Highlights: Pete gets Julie pregnant.
Lowlights: I kept wondering why he didn't read Linc as a cop, considering he shared so much with him.
Knock-outs and Injuries: No squad members were injured.
Locations: Bronson's Old Bookstore - 1017 Swarthmore Ave., Pacific Palisades
The school was Palisades High School
Linc picks up Dr. Eric Santos as a limo driver at the Edgewater Towers Condominium (Sunset Blvd.)
Exterior of house - 365 S. Hudson, Los Angeles (then and now)
Big Mama's Cafe (Michelle International) 1016 Swarthmore Ave., Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles
Mod Squad dress/Starsky & Hutch dress...I'd recognize it anywhere.
My Name Is Manolete Julie takes in a young, apparently destitute Mexican boy, not realizing that he is connected to a couple of thieves who don't want him talking to the wrong people.
Directed by: Robert Michael Lewis
Guest stars: Rex Holman, Jean Byron, Paul Sorensen, Paul Sorensen, Alma Beltran, Bruce Watson, Hal Smith, Eric Lee, Fabian Gregory
Rated: three out of five stars
"There was an Aztec woman who had her people massacred when she finked out to Cortez." ~ Pete
My Take: This one was cute-- and I liked the Mod Squad Mexican music soundtrack. Pete's Spanish came in remarkably handy. Linc really enjoyed kite flying (and in a later episode model airplane flying). Fabian Gregory was charming actor, yet only appeared in a few shows after Mod Squad.
Highlights: The interrogation by both Pete and later Captain Greer, who is enjoying himself a bit too much. The fact that the squad socialized with the captain outside of work. The coo coo clock. I grew up with one, since I spent a lot of time at my best friend's house.
Lowlights: The end was so maudlin when it didn't have to be. The boy had moved on. The squad seemed so depressed about that! Cherry cinnamon pie?
Knock-outs and Injuries: None.
An Eye For An Eye The widow an FBI agent, who is dating Greer, is kidnapped b a narcotics gang.
Directed by: Earl Bellamy
Guest stars: Nancy Gates, Arthur Batanides, William Vaughn, Francis De Sales, Bob Golden Boyd 'Red' Morgan
"What if you do this...and it's all been for nothing. Me, Pete and Julie. Then what do we do? Who do we believe in then?" ~ Linc to an unraveled Captain Greer
Rated: four stars out of five
My Take: The captain's in love and the squad is captivated by it. Very intense scene between Linc and the captain, which is used during flashback eps. Linc cracks the case in this one.
Highlights: The carwash opening scene. The beach posing and walk at the end. One of the ultimate endings. Pete in scuba gear. An in love and in angst Adam Greer. Captain Greer's superior human strength when saving his loved one.
Lowlights: Major blooper in the ending in which Linc is closest to the water, but when they pan back, Pete is closest.
Knock-outs and Injuries: Well, Pete is close to being knocked out during the rescue.
Locations: Car wash - Celebrity Car Wash 901 Vine St., Los Angeles.
Liz' beach house 29066 Cliffside Dr., Malibu
Liz' old property - Point Dume, Malibu
Closing - Point Dume, Malibu.
Ride The Man Down While on vacation, Pete befriends a woman who tells him her brother is missing. When she is found dead he's charged with her murder.
Directed by: George McCowan
Guest stars: Richard Anderson, Brenda Scott, Richard Forbes, Lynn Borden, Clyde Howdy, Robert Easton, Jo Ann Harris, Irene Tedrow, Guy Wilkerson, Chuck Shamata, Lester Fletcher
Rated: three and a half stars
"Julie sniffed it out. I should have gone after you." ~Linc to Pete
My Take: First off, Lynn Borden is Roxy (a drug addict) in the Starsky & Hutch episode, "Heroes'…she is hardly recognizable, since she played a very thin drug addict in Starsky & Hutch. The set up takes up most of the episode, so the squad has to solve the frame quickly, and they do. We learn Pete punched the then police chief in the mouth, so when he appeared as the D.A., it didn't look good for Pete.
Highlights: Pretty sunset lighting when Pete and Diane are talking while getting gas. Julie had a fun role to play. Pete's a jailbird. Learned a bit about his past police work, and awkward relationship with his friend, Judy.
Lowlights: Pete declared he's terrible at horseback riding. But in a future ep, he explains that his friend Rusty taught him how to ride and he owned a horse. Not sure why Pete was so gullible about the news of the phone not working.
Knock-outs and Injuries: Pete is drugged.
To Linc, With Love Linc is initially bummed about having to get his driver's license renewed until he meets the examiner. They start dating, but a man from her past comes back into her life and causes problems.
Directed by: George McCowan
Guest stars: Janet MacLachlan, Fred Pinkard, Allan Melvin, Maudie Prickett, Mia Fullmore, Ceil Cabot
Rated: four out of five stars
"All your life you wanted to be a goat?" ~ Ann (to Linc)
My Take: Adorable episode. Linc in love is fun to watch. We learned that Linc's place seemed to be on Irving and Marathon, but I can't find this intersection on Google Maps. Pete's birthday is on the 25th of the same month, possibly. Where did Linc get the gold car? It was much more of a chick magnet than the station wagon.
Highlights: Linc's birthday. Linc in love. Katie. Pete vs. five year old. Pete pretending to be Captain Greer.
Lowlights: Julie's birthday cake.
Knock-outs and Injuries: Just a broken heart...
Lisa After the police commissioner's sister is the apparent target of a killer, Greer and the squad are assigned to watch over her.
Directed by: Robert Michael Lewis
Guest stars: Carolyn Jones, Arthur Franz, Joseph Ruskin, Barney Phillips, Herbie Faye, Byron Foulger, Troy Melton
Rated: four out of five stars
"After all she's been through, she still has love to give." ~Linc
My Take: Joseph Ruskin was Rodell in Starsky & Hutch's "Satan's Witches"...Carolyn Jones was marvelous in this one. I think I enjoyed this episode because the three of them were together through much of it. I jumped a mile when Pete was attacked in the garage. The usual house on Hudson Street was used for the exterior/pool shots. There's something about this episode. The squad is so pretty to watch. They're so committed and personally involved. I noticed Julie wore clogs in the greenhouse scene.
Highlights: Carolyn Jones. Pete looks amazing in green. Lisa's pantsuit when she exits the plane.
Lowlights: Drugs at the drug store so easily in reach of customer. He should lose his license.
Knock-outs and Injuries: Captain Greer was nearly blown up. Pete was hit over the head.
Confrontation! During a campus demonstration a student protester is found dead. The protesters think he was killed by the police and the police think he was killed by another student.
Directed by: Gene Nelson
Guest stars: Simon Oakland, Robert F. Simon, Sid McCoy, Ta-Tanisha, Monica Keating, Maurice Warfiled, Jorge Moreno, Darryl Glenn, Dan Spelling, B.J. Mason
Rated: four out of five stars
"A man doesn't wear a label when the cops tell him to move along and he keeps his feet still." ~Viora Little
My Take: Very intense Linc episode and VERY relevant to what is going down now. Linc poses pretty in this one. His intensity jumps right off the screen. He is coming unglued. Pete is in the background solving the crime, and Julie? No one knows where she is during most of this episode, though she is in one scene and in the closing credits. Linc's stuntman is in yellow in this episode.
Highlights: Linc. Need I say more?
Lowlights:
Knock-outs and Injuries: None.
Willie Poor Boy During a botched robbery Willie falls down an elevator shaft. In the hospital they discover he's illiterate and try to help him learn to read and move beyond a life of crime. But his partner in crime doesn't want him talking to the cops.
Directed by: George McCowen
Guest stars: Joe Don Bakeer, Daniel J. Travanti, Wesley Lau, Arthur Peterson, Bobby Johnson, Stanley Adams
Rated: one out of five stars
"One of over twelve million in this country...push-outs, dropouts, kicked out." ~ Pete, the statistical wizard
My Take: I didn't care for this one. I understand the reason for featuring illiteracy, but it would have been more effective if it was someone less conspicuous that was not calling everything a hound dog. It was all pretty corny for Mod Squad. I noticed that Linc writes right and left handed.
Highlights: Um...I have to think...I finally learned where the stock hospital footage was taken. And that Linc was going to get Julie a hand carved chest set for her birthday. I saw an old school book that was used when I grew up.
Lowlights: So if he could write his name, his world would open up? Reminded me of my poor sister who had a long middle name...she was not allowed to have a library card until she could write her entire name as a four-year-old. Even I, as her harassing older sister, felt bad for her.
Knock-outs and Injuries:
Locations: Glendale Memorial Hospital (Memorial Hospital then) 1504 S. Central Ave., Glendale, CA - looks completely rebuilt, different building.
The Death Of Wild Bill Hannachek Julie is posing as a singer at a wayside inn as the squad investigates the death of a fading country-western singer.
Directed by: Earl Bellamy
Guest stars: Murray MacLeod, Tim O'Kelly, Tyne Daly, Sheb Wooley, Will Mackenzie, Arthur Malet, Ida Mae McKenzie, Florence Lake, James Griffith
Rated: three stars out of five
"Goodbye ol' paint" ~ Linc
My Take: While not a spectacular episode, I liked the old 50s retro feel with the look of the cars that were featured. Speaking of cars, The Woody was treated as a special guest star, because it would be her last appearance.
Highlights: People kept dying right before they could reveal important information. Linc and Woody's "accident"...Interesting seeing Tyne Daly in her first Mod Squad episode. The goodbye to Ol' Paint, whose death was featured in a TV Guide pictorial.
Lowlights:
Knock-outs and Injuries: Pete is nearly blown up by a grenade, but he is a fast thinker...
Michael's story (Talking about Cars):
A Place To Run, A Heart To Hide In Pete, Linc, and Julie enroll in college as students to help aid the campus investigation of a young man's mysterious death.
Directed by: Earl Belamy
Guest stars: Don DeFore, Tom Tully, Christopher Stone, Geoffrey Deuel, Ben Archibek, Michael McGreevey, Paul Lukather
Rated: two and a half stars out of five
"Some little boys like to pull the wings off flies." ~Linc
My Take: Just what did Holly do to the girl to cause her to be in the sanitarium? My childhood best friend was named Holly. But she was a girl.
Highlights: Julie's yellow dress. Only person I know who looks good in yellow. Pete's reaction to the captain announcing Pete's past football career.
Lowlights: The hazing... always demoralizing. The awkward kiss between Holly and Julie in front of Pete and Linc.
Knock-outs and Injuries: None. Pete doesn't even put up a fight when they nab him.
The Healer After a man attending the funeral service of a friend of Linc's is run down by a car right outside the service, the trio investigate and find the hit-and-run victim had referred Linc's friend, and other patients, to an unconventional healer.
Directed by: Earl Bellamy
Guest stars: Paul Richards, Dwayne Hickman, Doreen Lang, Pepe Hern, John Dennis, Betty Lynn Bartlett Robinson, Ella Mae Brown, Anna Navarro
Rated: three out of five stars
"It's all within you. YOU are the physician" ~ Asa Lorimer
My Take: Interesting that the healer needed a healer...Linc pushed a little too hard in this episode, and Miss Finny paid. Julie fell in love with her man of the week. The healer's place is the same place where they had that adoption blackmail racket.
Highlights: Pete's pretty deep blue (sheer) shirt. Miss Finny and Captain Greer. Pete's fake migraine and his eye roll in the healer's office.
Lowlights: Poor Miss Finny. What furniture the loansharks didn't take, Pete and Linc destroyed. Pete's ice test--fail.
Knockouts and Injuries: Just bumps and bruises during fight, I suppose.
Locations: Echo Park, Los Angeles
Frederick Mitchell Mooers House - 818 S. Bonnie Brae St., Los Angeles, CA (Lorimer's office)
In This Corner - Sol Alpert When Pete and Linc's friend Sol Alpert (who survived a plane crash with them and Captain Greer in the first season episode "Flight Five Doesn't Answer") finds his business vandalized, he then learns it was done in protest over living conditions in ghetto housing owned by his own cousin. Sol decides to fight his cousin to get improvements in the housing, and with Pete, Linc, and Julie's help decides to bring the matter to a Jewish court.
Directed by: Robert Michael Lewis
Guest stars: Marvin Kaplan, Noam Pitlik, Steve Franken, Loretta Leversee, Sheldon, Austin Stoker, Arand Alzamora, Vince Howard, Wayne Heffley, Kevin Michaels, Pepper Martin
Rated: three stars out of five
"Did they tell you? We were on an airplane together." ~ Sol to Julie
My Take: They need a TV repair man so they called Sol, of course. Love how the boys had bonded with him as a person because of what they went through in the plane crash. I love how the ending music changes slightly to accommodate the mood.
Highlights: I love Sol's conviction in doing what was right. Pete's run in with a cop and how Captain Greer supported him.
Lowlights: When they go to the housing commission, it gets a little lecture-y.
Knock-outs and Injuries: None.
Locations: Simon Alpert's apartment - 570 N. Rossmore Ave., L.A.
Synagogue - Temple of Israel of Hollywood, 7300 Hollywood Blvd., L.A.

Never Give The Fuzz An Even Break Pete, Linc, and Julie go undercover to trap a suave, charming veteran con man. His latest targets are three gullible elderly widows.
Directed by: Earl Bellamy
Guest stars: Maurice Evans, Harriate E. MacGibbon, Amzie Strickland, William Smith, Louise Lewis, David Ketchum, Frank Wilcox, Don Wilbanks, Rodolfo Hoyos Jr., Judson Pratt, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez
Rated: three and a half out of five stars
Pete: That's 'cause he knows you can't bug a glass room.
Captain Greer: Well it bugs me.
My Take: A much lighter episode. The squad doesn't seem too concerned with the crimes. In fact, at times they seem to side with the swindler, much to the frustration of the captain. And they always meet where it's hot...Fun episode, but not as fun as "Kicks Incorporated" but fun none-the-less.
Highlights: Captain's frustration was humorous. Relationship between the con man and squad.
Lowlights:
Knock-outs and Injuries: None

The Debt Pete searches for a young man who saved him from beating by muggers, but then ran off when he discovered he was a cop. He finds that the young man is trying to look for his father, who has escaped from an institution and may be planning to come after a businessman who cheated him.
Directed by: Jerry Jameson
Guest stars: Nehemiah Persoff, Peter Brown, Marj Dusay, Jay Novello, Ross Elliott, Solomon Sturges, Melora Conway, Art Lewis, Judd Laurance, Robert Broyles
Rated: three out of five stars
"Oh no, Pete. Not you. Your emotions are showing." ~ Captain Greer
My Take: This is one odd episode. Pete is walking down a dark alley after a movie (and in a future episode he kiddingly says he makes it a habit to stay out of dark alleys). Maybe he learned a lesson. Julie's out of town and does not make an appearance in this episode. The case stems from a family drama that turns into a murder frame. Linc plays classical music at his place and it plays throughout a scene. Captain Greer meets this comedic nurse who flirts with him, and by episode's end he's dating her. Linc says "I can dig it" a lot.
Highlights: Interesting unraveling of a mystery.
Lowlights: No Julie, though I like the Pete, Linc, Captain dynamic. Pete seemed pretty beat up with possible rib injuries, but it cuts to Linc cleaning a tiny cut on his arm, and then all is apparently well.
Knock-outs and Injuries: Pete gets beat up.
Sweet Child Of Terror Julie is kidnapped and held for ransom by a disturbed young man who has mistaken her for her friend, the daughter of a wealthy woman whom he wants to punish for insulting him.
Directed by: Earl Bellamy
Guest stars: Martine Bartlett, Dennis Patrick, Robert Karnes, Marjorie Bennett, Harry Hickox, Yolanda Gonazlez, Robert Salvio
Rated: three out of five stars
Captain Greer: You wait better than he (Pete) does.
Linc: Not better. Just quieter.
My Take: It's hard to feel sorry for the villain, but this show is very good at showing what makes a person breakdown and become a villain.
Highlights: Pete's impatience.
Lowlights: The women in villain's life were awful and belittling.
Knock-outs and Injuries: None to the squad.
The King Of Empty Cups Chief Metcalf asks the squad to find his daughter, who has left home despondent after the death of her fiancé in Vietnam. They find her addicted to drugs and part of a decadent rock star's coterie.
Directed by: Robert Michael Lewis
Guest stars: Noel Harrison, Simon Scott, Renne Jarrett, Clive Clerk, Anne Randall, Barbara Shannon, Pegi Boucher, Heber Jentzsch
Rated: three and a half stars out of five
"We're all on the same trip, baby. Through the green path with the little white headstones. I just want to go a groovy route." ~ Quinn
My Take: This one has a Manson feel to me because of the gory killings. The chief needing the squad was nice.
Highlights: Pete breaking up when reading the letters of Elizabeth's fiancé. The music scene. Linc coming so close to saving Elizabeth the first time. The squad listening to records.
Lowlights: The fat comments were pretty low.
Knock-outs and Injuries: None.
A Town Called Sincere While on a motorcycle trip to Mexico, Pete and Linc are detoured by a biker gang into a border town and held hostage along with all of the town's residents. The gang refuses to leave until they find out who in the town killed two of their members.
Directed by: Earl Bellamy
Guest stars: Tom Stern, Ford Rainey, Lisa Gaye, Gregory Sierra, Lee de Broux, Peter Mamokos, Maggie Malooly, David Renard, Frances Fong, Joseph Mosca, J. Kenneth Campbell
Rated: three and a half stars
"Man. I'm tired of this. I am real tired of this." ~Linc
My Take: Julie was off at her mother's (again), so the boys solo-ed. They decided to have a taco in Sincere. then they learned there was trouble, so they had to get there.
Highlights: The re-enactment. Poor Pete getting beat up to cover for Linc. Linc totally winning the fight. Bragging rights. Cute helmets with their names on it. The eyes of one of the actresses. Suey. The captain driving the motorbike in the tag.
Lowlights: Sad that they picked on an old man as a victim to terrorize the town. The wrap-up was a bit unclear as to what happened to all those bikers.
Knock-outs and Injuries: "Hero" got beat up a lot. Linc won a fight.
The Exile Julie becomes romantically involved with a foreign exchange student from a Middle Eastern country which is in political turmoil, not knowing that he is actually the son of the country's king and that his life is in danger from his father's opponents.
Directed by: Robert Michael Lewis
Guest stars: Nico Minardos, Lawrence Dane, David Hurst, Ben Aliza, James Sikking, Byron Morrow
Rated: three stars out of five (barely)
"I can't find my head." ~ Julie
My Take: So Julie picked a prince she has known only a few days who has lied to her over Pete and Linc? That is until he started treating her like she was just a stupid woman. This episode was kind of painful in how gullible Julie can be.
Highlights: Pete's cut out vest. The beach. Julie's audit.
Lowlights: Pete and Linc kind of stand around a lot in this episode. The prince reminded me of some Middle Eastern Tom Jones wanna-be.
Knock-outs and Injuries: None
Locations: Beach house - 24058 Malibu Rd., Malibu, CA
Survival House Guest star Sammy Davis Jr plays Billy Lee Watson, a recovered drug addict who is accused of statutory rape b his alleged victim's father, who wants to close down the halfway house Billy has been appointed director of. Billy was trying to help the girl, who is herself addicted, and pregnant, and is actually Billy's daughter.
Directed by: George McCowen
Guest stars: Sammy David Jr., William Smithers, Billy Daniels, Mira Waters, John Roper, Martin Braddock, Cynthia Hull, Armand Alzamora, Jay Powell, Bob golden, Isabel Cooley
Rated: three stars out of five
"But like the lady wrote....I never promised you a rose garden." ~Captain Greer to Julie
My Take: Sammy Davis always seems to take over the show...so, of course, I wanted more of the squad. Their job was to literally watch him, while Sammy got to tell a long story, hit guys over the head, find a dangerous drug dealer, get high....yeah, he stole the show. Which would be fine, if it were the Sammy Davis Drama hour.
Highlights: Pete's green glasses. Sammy in red. Psychedelic fight scene. The squad knowing the drug addict's every move. Pete's ugly leather watchband. I know, because I owned one just like it. It was even uglier on me.
Lowlights: Fake blood. Wondered if the father ever found out about Sammy being the father of his daughter? I guess I am to assume?
Knock-outs and Injuries: Pete and Linc were both knocked out. Some protection they were.
Locations: Pix theater, 6126 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA (seen in background in driving shot)
Mother of Sorrow Pete's fraternity brother is framed for murder.
Directed by: Gene Nelson
Guest stars: Lee Grant, Richard Dreyfuss, Harry Basch, Sherry E. DeBoer
Rated: three and a half stars out of five
Captain Greer: Mr. Bell, it's my understanding you live alone with your mother, is that right?
Curtis: That's an interesting paradox. How do I live alone, if I live with my mother?
My Take: Actually Pete's fraternity brother frames himself. I really don't understand how he announces a murder of a particular girl, then coincidently is present when someone else murders her. But this episode is really about mental illness and getting a mother's attention. And Dreyfus plays mental beautifully carrying this episode.
Highlights: Dreyfuss. The wind blowing in the final scene.
Lowlights: The rhino scene and the zooming in to Julie. A rather difficult shoot, since three stunt double were used and the scene needed movement. But Julie's deadpan expression seemed out of place. Thought Julie could have gotten away from Dreyfus, since he had no weapon that she knew of.
Knock-outs and Injuries: None.
Locations: Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens - Griffith Park, 5333 Zoo Dr., Los Angeles, CA
Wilshire Ebell Theatre - 4401 W. 8th st., Los Angeles, CA
Theater then and now:
The Deadly Sin A young nun sees her gangster father commit a murder, but blanks out the memory of it. Unfortunately, higher-ups in the syndicate learn of it and decide to have her hit.
Directed by: Jerry Jameson
Guest stars: Lynn Loring, Bert Freed, Don Dubbins, Kermit Murdock, Claudia Bryar, Dennis Cross, Elizabeth Harrower, Maira Grimm
Rated: three out of five stars
Melissa: I just hate girls who cry.
Pete: I hate girls who don't.
My Take: I found this to be a very disjointed episode. I finally connected Lynn Loring as the same actress who left the baby that Julie took in in the future episode,"Shockwave"... Pete and Linc definitely dressed like city boys in the boat, though they didn't fish like them. I forgot how absent Pete and Linc were in the first half of this episode, but Pete sure makes up for it in the last half.
Highlights: Pete when he takes Melissa under his wing. Lynn Loring. Fishing scene. Pete and Linc going undercover as land surveyors. (Good idea!)
Lowlights: I had a problem with the way Pete was written in this episode. Why would he leave Melissa at Julie's place alone, when he's been assigned to protect her from the syndicate?! Bad move, no matter what Pete's reasoning. And plot-wise, they could have had Melissa decide after confession to go to the police and have Pete take her. There was no reason for this non-sense, and Pete's a smarter cop than that. Pete jokes to Julie that she's not going to make it when she comes to in the hospital. East coast bad guy's yellow silk sheets. All kinds of wrong.
Knock-outs and Injuries: Julie is knocked out and hospitalized.
A Time For Remembering As the trio reminisces over two years together, and Pete considers quitting the group to work with his father, an old nemesis arrives: Beau Graves, one of those they helped put in jail in the premier episode. He has just been paroled and has come seeking revenge against the trio.
Directed by: Gene Nelson
Guest stars: Gary Vinson, Richard Eastham, Simon Scott, Mark Tapscott, Florence Halop, Roberta Randall, Jerry Strickler, Janice Barr, Russ Conway
Rated: five stars out of five
"Two things happened last night, Julie. And they have to be connected. I hung up on my father, and ten minutes later I'm trying to convince some nurse that I'm related to Linc. ~ Pete
My Take: This was one of the most powerful flashback episodes of any show. The theme was definition of family. The squad's life if threatened in many episodes, and they always come out on the other side. This episode, a happy ending is on hold. Strangely, while I remember this episode as a kid, it stood out more to me as an adult. After experiencing a lousy flashback episode on Starsky & Hutch, I could truly appreciate this one more. This one had heart. Starsky & Hutch was lazy. I forgot that the doctor was the one involved in a plane crash in an earlier episode.
Highlights: Key flashbacks. Pete. The chief thanking them...
Lowlights: I wondered why this wasn't the last episode of season two. It would have given Linc more time to heal. Linc and Julie's reaction to the chief's praise was so stoic. It felt odd to me.
Knock-outs and Injuries: Linc gets shot twice.
Return To Darkness, Return To Light Janny Willis, first introduced in the first season episode, "A Hint Of Darkness, A Hint of Light", invites Linc, Pete, and Julie to meet her new fiancé, Dr. Frank Tarver. Tarver doesn't tell them that he is being threatened by a man blaming him for his daughter's death. But when the trio investigates further, they find that Tarver may not be who he seems.
Directed by : Robert Michael Lewis
Guest stars: Gloria Foster, Ivan Dixon, Karl Swenson, Bobby Johnson, Jason Wingreen, Tina Menard, Buddy Lewis, Lorraine Davies, Dawn Villerre
Rated: two and a half stars out of five
"You were writing about life! And you've got to go through it all...the good, the bad, the darkness, the light' ~ Linc (to Janny)
My Take: This was a revisit to Janny. I just found this episode a little dry, because I wasn't that interested in Frank. I was more interested in the chick Pete wasn't into.
Highlights: Um....I guess it was good seeing Janny as more independent. We got to see a lot of Pete's pad. Pete's pinstriped pants.
Lowlights: Kind of dumb for her to put out an ad waving her money around.
Knock-outs and Injuries: None to squad.
Call Back Yesterday Pete visits his Beverly Hills home to try to help his old girlfriend, who believes his father is being kept in a mental ward against his will and manipulated by her uncle and cousin. While there, Pete also reunites with his mother.
Directed by: Gene Nelson
Guest stars: Margot Kidder ,Anita Louise, Mark Goddard, Morgan Sterne, James Farley, Diane Sayer, Edmon Ryan
Rated: three and a half stars out of five
"You know something? You're a good looking chick...for a mother." ~Pete
My Take: In this episode too much is assumed, and Pete's completely wrong about what's really going on. Doesn't really know how to deal with an ex-girlfriend and mother, since he apparently abandoned both. I understand the actress who played Pete's mother (Anita Louise) passed a month after her Mod Squad appearance.
Highlights: Fun seeing Margot Kidder and Mark (Lost in Space) Goddard.
Lowlights: The highbrow party (with butler service) at Pete's pad was odd. Linc's tie?
Knock-outs and Injuries: None.
Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot! Pete, Linc, and Julie go undercover working on a film project on which strange accidents have occurred. The film is based on a twenty-year old murder mystery, and the director believes the real killer is trying to sabotage it because he fears his identity will be revealed.
Directed by: Robert Michael Lewis
Guest stars: Frank Converse, Ed Asner, Paul Stewart, Linda Marsh, Norman Alden, Paul Kent, Barbara Boles, Tracie Savage, Harvey Parry, Don Gazzaniga, Michael Hinn
Rated: three stars out of five
Captain: You remember reading about it in the papers.
Linc: Captain, at '48 and '49 none of us could read.
Pete: But we're glad you could.
My Take: A film noir episode. But it's hard to watch Frank Converse play another character when he was famous for playing Jack, Hutch's good childhood friend in Starsky & Hutch.
Highlights: Chateau Ridgeley. Lou Grant (heh, he'll always be Lou to me). Nice shots of Pete and Linc in their tweed. Julie in bright green (one could only get away with in that time period). Linc's stuntman's dive to save Julie.
Lowlights: Wished there was a bit more action. Very stylized- noir style.
Knock-outs and Injuries: Julie nearly crushed.
Locations: Chateau Ridgeley 613-619 S. Ridgeley Dr., Los Angeles, CA
The Loser After he tries to stop a runaway car, the son of a former cop and friend of Captain Greer is charged with stealing the vehicle. Then it is learned that the car, which belonged to a judicial candidate's campaign worker, was also involved in a hit-and-run. The trio goes undercover at the candidate's headquarters to further investigate.
Directed by: Gene Nelson
Guest stars: Diana Muldaur, Frank Aletter, Charles Aidman, Milon Selzer, David Cassidy, Marion Ross, Jordan Rhodes, Robert Broyles
Rated: three out of five stars
"Any other job, any other business you make a mistake and you get another chance to make it right, to get back on the track again. But not a cop." ~ Captain Greer
My Take: A young David Cassidy and Marion Ross. This episode was a bit slow with not much suspense. By show's end Pete takes on the appearance of a leprechaun.
Highlights: Pizza making! An honest politician. Angsty Captain Greer. Linc's stunt double.
Lowlights: Campaign settings are boring. Stuffing envelopes and typing makes for a boring cover.
Knock-outs and Injuries: None
